Some Wise Words for the Weekend

1. Don’t use words too big for the subject. Don’t say “infinitely” when you mean “very”; otherwise you’ll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite.

C.S. Lewis

2. Words, once they are printed, have a life of their own.

Carol Burnett

3. Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self.

Cyril Connolly

4. Beneath the rule of men entirely great, the pen is mightier than the sword.

Edward Bulwer-Lytton

5. This is the sixth book I’ve written, which isn’t bad for a guy who’s only read two.

George Burns

  1. I love these, and certainly have a lot of experience with no. 3

  2. Marie

No. 1 there is a great one. I get irked by people overusing words like ‘genius’, it dilutes their effect when you really need them! Great list :)

  3. “This is the sixth book I’ve written, which isn’t bad for a guy who’s only read two” – Haha.

I agree with No. 1 too – Another thing is when people attach “-esque” to the end of words. Like “That’s so Roisinesque!” :( Or “It literally rained cats and dogs. I was literally gobsmacked”. That must have been both shocking and painful ;D

    I like the illustration again!

  4. Loved the illustration! Things are changing! Saw the trailers for the ‘comedy’ Hot Tub something at the weekend – one scene where the time traveller asks his date back in the 80s for her email or if she’s on FB. She just says ‘Sorry, I’ve no idea what you’re talking about’ and leaves

  5. @Brigid; I can identify with number 3 for sure too:)

@Marie; I know what you mean; I know about one million “genius” people, since the word is so overused!

@Róisín; Guilty as charged for overusing the word “literally” too much. Although I’m making a conscious effort to stop it.

@Niamh; Saw Hot Tob Time Machine last week. It’s hilarious and hard to believe that things have changed so much in the last 20 years…

  6. I love the third one. This weekend, I attended a conference and even agents said something similar.
